Card magic is being performed since times immemorial. Easy and cheap to acquire, magicians have always used cards for their performance as the number of tricks which can be performed are large and varied and relatively easy to learn after mastering the basic techniques of magic cards.

Even though there can be thousands and thousands of card tricks, the basic principals underlying all these techniques remain the same and number around a few hundred. Most of these techniques can be classified either as sleight of hand, self-working or trick decks.

Sleight of hand and self working basically involve using the hands skillfully to move the cards within the deck around. These techniques are largely a test of the dexterity of the hand movements.

They require a lot of practice and are used in the performance of most card tricks. Since the audience is always watching the hands of the magician, especially during the performance of card tricks, both the sleight of hand and self working have to be truly mastered in order to perform a perfect magical show.

Trick decks are special decks of cards which have been specially developed for magical performances. They do not consist of the normal fifty-two cards present in a pack of cards. One such example of trick decks is the Svengali deck. A Svengali deck consists of 26 cards of the same color and denomination, such as the eight of diamonds, and twenty six other normal cards.

These twenty six, eight of diamonds are slightly shorter in height than the other twenty six and help the magician to perform several tricks with them.

There are a lot of simple and easy card tricks which anyone can perform. One of the best ways to perform card tricks is to keep on talking and slowly move your hands to perform the trick rather than make quick gestures as the audience is always looking at your hands to try and guess the move that you are about to make. Let start with some free beginner card tricks ...

Easy Card Trick Number 1 : First perform a secret operation i.e. flip the bottom card of the deck. Now, in front of the audience, fan the cards in such a way that the audience cannot see the flipped card. Ask one person to pick a card from the deck.

While he/she is looking at his card, flip the deck again and as the bottom card has been flipped, it will look like the top of the deck.

Now keep on talking and slowly flip the bottom card so that it will be the flipped card that will get chosen. As the audience member puts the chosen card back into the deck, it will be the only card which will be upside-down in the entire deck.

Now you can act and shuffle the cards as long as you want and still be able to find the chosen card as it's the only one facing upside-down.

Easy Card Trick Number 2 : Prior to facing the audience, take out all the aces from the deck and slip three cards under the top three cards. Now, ask an audience member to choose an ace for himself. Take the chosen ace and put it face up on top of the deck.

Then, take the remaining three aces and also put them face up on top of the deck. Now take all the seven cards and simply start flipping the aces one at a time with their face down, but not showing the three non aces. When the ace with the non aces comes along, i.e. the one chosen by the audience member, first lay it alongwith the non aces and then flip the ace.

This is the only part of this trick which requires skill. Now, tell everyone that you are going to deal the aces and deal these cards even though three are not aces. So, according to the trick, the first one from the left should be an ace.

Now, here comes the magic. Put three cards on top of each pile. Now, everyone will expect that there will be an ace in each pile. But all the four aces will be present in only the last pile.

Free Magic Card Tricks

There a large number of free magic card tricks available on the internet. Most of them are very easy to perform and learn. Two such tricks are explained in this article below.

Trick Number 1 :

Take two cards from the top of the deck and make them appear as if they were one card. Show the card to everyone and call out the name of the card. Let us say that it is the Queen of Spades. Now, put it back on top of the deck. Since you have performed a double lift, the Queen of Spades becomes the bottom card in reality and there is another card on top of the deck. Then, take the actual card on top and put it in your pocket.

Do another double lift, show the card, call out its name and put it back on the deck. Again, take the top card and call a volunteer from the audience. Put the card in his/her hand, and ask him/her to put the other hand over it like a sandwich.

Now, you also palm the top card and say that you are going to take out the Queen of Spades. Then, you put your hand in your pocket and take out the card that you just palmed and ask the volunteer to show his/her card. When he/she does so, it will appear as if yours and his/her card swapped places by magic.

Trick Number 2 :

Before facing the audience, pre-arrange the deck by separating the cards into two piles of black red cards. Put these two piles on top of each other to form a complete deck. Now, in front of the audience, casually split the deck in half and ask a volunteer to come and choose one card from any of the piles. Then, ask him to place that card into the other pile.

Now, al you have to do is go through that pile and take out the card of the different color since there will be only one red card in the black pile or one black card in the red pile.
